Tipster Tuesday: Flaxseed Meal

Sorry this is so late!

Some of this is old information we posted several months ago on our other blog Naturally CentsAble...It's worth repeating!

From Bob's Red Mill
Flaxseed has been recognized around the world as a food with amazing health benefits. Research indicates that flax acts as a protector against chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease and some cancers. Click on this
link to find out what makes just two tablespoons a day of ground flaxseed such good medicine and how you can incorporate it into your diet.

I'm not sure how it happened but I recently became a flaxseed lover! I read Dr Sears Book, The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood and took much of what he wrote to heart. Flax was one of the things that really stuck out to me and I began adding that and wheat germ to as many of our meals as I could.

One day I read (on a package of Bob's Red Mill Flaxseed Meal) that I could substitute flaxseed meal for the oil or butter in a recipe at a ratio of 3 to 1 (so if you need 1/2 c oil you can substitute 1 1/2 c flaxseed meal). So, of course I tried it!I was so excited that I could make healthy wheat bread for my family and include the flax! Read how I do it in our bread!

I actually cut the ratio back a bit to save on the flaxseed but I've never had any problems. They do mention that baked goods will brown more quickly and if there is little or no other liquids in the recipe you may want to add some or leave some of the oil/butter in.

It's a very healthy way to bake...it can be costly so just be sure to buy your flaxseed meal in bulk, you'll save about $.50 - $1.00 a pound that way!

Do you have to keep the flaxseed meal refigerated to prevent it going rancid/stale? I have been wanting to try it and wondered. thanks - Sarah

I do keep it in the fridge - they reccommend that on the package and it's stored in the cooler section at our health foods store. I think it really only matters once you open it because the Bob's Red Mill packages are NOT stored in the cooler at any of the stores I've been to.

Thanks so much for this! I love the info on your natural products etc. and how to get these for good deals as well as tips for the kitchen. I have found this to be the biggest challenge- eating right and saying no to preservatives and chemicals- while saving $$.

Thanks for the info! I just recently found out about flaxseed meal too. I have also read it keeps better if you buy the whole seed, then use a coffee grinder to grind just what you need each time you use it. If it is whole seed, you can store it at room temperature.
